Well folks, that's it! The end of a fabulous 2011 Peterborough Downtown Farmers' Market Season.
Thanks to all the market-goers, shoppers, vendors, musicians, guest Chefs, farmers', bakers, roasters and everyone for making it an amazing year. Hope that your pantry and fridge are well stocked up! See you all in the Spring!

Guest Chef Will Wood-Gates

For our last day of the season we were lucky enough to have Will Wood-Gates from 38 Degrees as our Guest Chef. He made amazing Mushroom & Goat Cheese Ravioli & Crosswind Goat Chili. Market-goers were treated to delicious samples and some insights on how to use some of our fabulous market products in new & creative ways! Thanks Will!

Crosswind Goat Chili

1 onion diced

1 pound of Crosswind ground goat

1 chili from Martin's Fruit & Vegetables

2 cups of Pie Pumpkin from Martin's Fruits & Vegetables

4 cloves of Gaelic Garlic

1 tblsp cumin

4 tblsp chili powder

1 cup of kernelled white corn from McLeans Berry Farm

1/4 cup chopped cilantro

1 lime

2 Diced Honey Crisp Apples from Deer Bay Farm

2 cans of diced tomatoes

1 can mixed beans

Mushroom & Goat Cheese Ravioli:

Fresh Pasta:

2 cups of All-Purpose Flour

2 cups Seminola

6 eggs

2 tblsp olive oil

Filling:

4 cups of mushrooms from Waymac Farms

1/4 cup of butter

1 diced shallot from Woolerdale Farms

2 Gaelic Garlic cloves

1/4 cup of red wine

1 package of Herbs de Provence chevre from Crosswind Farms

pinch of salt

If you can believe it, this Wednesday is the final market of the 2011 Peterborough Downtown Farmers' Market Season. It has been my absolute delight to be the manager of this fabulous market this season. It truly is a wonderful place.

On Wednesday Oct. 5th, Guest Chef Will Wood-Gates from 38 degrees will be on-site cooking up Crosswind Farms goat meat, Waymac Farms mushrooms and other delectable seasonal produce from our wonderful vendors. Come on down to try out a sample!

We are so lucky to have so many farmers', bakers, roasters, crafters', and cooks work incredibly hard to bring the amazing products to the downtown core every week.

Be sure to join us between 8:30-2pm on Wednesday Oct. 5th. Stock up on your favourite products, enjoy the atmosphere, and be sure to thank the vendors for all their hard-work. I know that I will greatly miss this place over the winter, but alas, perhaps we all need a little time to recoup and hibernate!

Guest Chef Dahn D'Lion from the Planet Bakery

The Downtown Market was really happy to have Dahn join us as our guest Chef on August 31st. He is famous for making his vegan treats at the Planet Bakery, and after gathering a whole bunch of ingredients donated from our fabulous vendors he started out cooking all kinds of great vegan goodies from market-goers.

The food went so fast that I barely had time to photograph it, these are the few shots I got in; above is the fresh made vegan crepes ready to be stuffed & covered with an apple pear deliciousness (obviously i need to ask for a more specific recipe!) and below is the amazing melon gazpacho made with many donated melons & heirloom tomatoes; it was cleverly displayed & kept cool in the watermelon that helped make it!

An amazing salad with all kinds of donated veggies such as zucchini, basil, beets, peppers, and tomatoes. It was so good, it looked like this very quickly -

The one plate that I managed to capture ~ Vegan quiche with mushrooms and zucchini, crepes and wonderful salad

Thanks again Dahn. and all the great vendors who donated ingredients! Well all the vendors are great; but you know what I mean!

This week at the Downtown Farmers' Market, the tomatoes are starting to roll in. Come down early to get yourself a basket of brightly coloured and delicious heirloom tomatoes! You can also pick up some fresh baked bread & goat's cheese or chevre and feast on toasted tomato sandwiches all week long.

Of course, there is also tonnes of prolific produce at market right now. It is the season of plenty, so come down & buy a bushel and get home & start canning, freezing or dehydrating.
There will also be a draw to win a basket of fresh market goodies. Come down & enter to win some of the best groceries you could imagine.

Brio Gusto Recipe

Here is the recipe for the delicious treat made by Brio Gusto last month at the market:

Garden Vegetable Sliders

3.5c chickpea flour

4 cups split peas

1 can chick peas - rinsed

8oz mushrooms (we used button, crimini & portobella)

1tsp cumin

1 tbsp soy sauce

1 white onion - sauteed

lots of garlic

1/2 cup of nutritional yeast

scallions to your taste

Sautee onions allow to cool

blend 1/2 of the split peas, all of the mushrooms, chickpeas, soy, cumin, garlic & yeast in a food processor. add cooled onions and blend to smooth

Add the other 1/2 of the peas for mouth feel and work the chickpea flour in with you hands until it form a thick pancake like batter

season to taste with salt and pepper

to cook : heat a cast iron pan to medium, with a bit of oil fry about 1 oz of batter for slidders and 3-4 oz for regular size until heated through

Mayor Ford and some City councillors want to increase user fees across Toronto for many important services and programs. Sign a petition to help stop fee increases for Farmers' Markets. Any increase in the cost to Toronto Farmers' Markets may put farmers in a position where they can no longer participate. Please send a message to Mayor Ford and your councillor telling them to keep fees to Farmers' Markets low.

Farmers' Markets make Toronto a greener and healthier City.

Toronto residents benefit from fresh seasonal food brought directly to their neighbourhoods and the markets encourage people to participate in their communities and meet their neighbours. The environment benefits when food travels a shorter distance, using less fossil fuel and less packaging. Markets support and encourage family farmers. Increasing the costs of running farmers’ markets will make it prohibitive for farmers to attend. It is already difficult enough for farmers to earn a living at markets.

Farmers' Markets contribute a lot to the City, the environment, our neighbourhoods and the local economy.

We the undersigned are asking that Mayor Ford and Toronto City councillors:

Do not vote to increase costs for Farmers' Markets. Instead please work to reduce barriers;
Facilitate space in parks, parking lots and other suitable locations;
Keep fees low to market organizers and vendors; and,
Maintain low cost parking options for farmers.

I never have a lot of energy to cook after market, but last night, all I had to do was slice! Mmm. raspberries, blueberries, cherries, cucumbers and fresh feta! amazing & refreshing!

On July 20th, Brio Gusto joined us as our guest Chefs. The fabulous Lindsey & Jamie went around to meet the farmers' and collected fresh feta from Crosswind Farms, portobello & brown mushrooms from Waymac Farms, peas & dill from Sunroot Organics, peas & greenhouse tomatoes from C. Bruni & Sons, Rainbow Chard from Deer Bay Farrms, and zucchini & new potatoes from Martin's Fruit & Veggies, and a fresh Baquette from Cedarview Farms.

They rushed off to Brio Gusto located close-by to do some prep, and returned with fabulous fresh made chips, and sliders (Recipes coming soon!)

They fried up the veggie patties & assembled the delicious 'sliders' on site, much to the delight of hungry market-goers. Not much talking was done, but a chorus of mmm, and delicious, and what is in that, and more mmm's followed for the next few hours.

Thanks so much to all the vendors who donated food, and to Brio Gusto's great Chefs, Lindsey & Jamie who braved the heat & brought us delicious market treats! and inspirational ideas on using local seasonal food!

The was wild weather down at the market on July 13th. Most of the market was hot & sunny with blue skies. All of the sudden a dust storm appeared in the parking lot across the street, on the black clouds opened up with rain & strong winds. rumbling skies and more wind only lasted a few minutes. repeat. then back to sunny skies. two storms, one market. what a day.

Using some succulent sausage from Waste Not Firewood & Farm Products, romaine lettuce and hot house tomatoes from C. Bruni & Sons, Fresh herbs from Sunroot Organics, Asparagus from Wooderdale Organic Farms, and fabulous feta from Cross Wind Farms, Lorianne Cicchillio set to making delicious sample salads for market-goers

The asparagus and tomatoes were lightly grilled on the bbq.

A fabulous dressing was made with the fresh herbs, honey, and olive oil

All the ingredients were mixed in together and handed out to happy customers.

My treasures for the day!

Things are really starting to come into season at the Downtown Farmers' Market. It's like a feast for your eyes down at the Louis St. Parking Lot, and of course your mouth!

Yes! Garlic Scapes! For anyone that knows what a garlic scape is, the excitement of their arrival is hard to hide!

For anyone who doesn't, i highly recommend them! They are the stem and flower that garlic sends out at this time of year. If you cut them off, they send the energy of the plant back into the garlic bulb instead of the seed, AND they taste delicious.

And yes, there is strawberries. they sold out in a blink of an eye last week, so get her early!

What better way to brighten your office, kitchen table, the hearts of your friends, or family, and generally your day; than a bouquet of freshly picked seasonal flowers. Lots of them available, the season has only just begun!

New vendors, Slow Acres Farm brought along lots of delicious treats including gorgeous cupcakes, 'beetza' and other toppings fresh from the wood-fired oven. They are a great addition to our market. Come and check them out!

On June 8th, we had one heck of a hot market. Vendors were doing all kinds of things to keep cool, including, wetting bandanas with ice water, drinking lots of lemonade, and trying to seek shade! Lots of great things are starting to roll off the farms and into the market. Remember to keep thanking your farmer for working so hard in this heat, and cold, and wet, and all the different weather that Spring has brought this season.

I think we are all excited by the content of this sign. mmm. strawberries. follow-us on Twitter & I will update you as soon as they (& other seasonal goodies) arrive!

The first market of June brought with it 60km/ winds. Which for anyone who knows the havoc that a slight wind can have on a market booth, you sure know what clipping winds could do. Farmers' worked together to keep their tents tethered, came up with creative weighting techniques, or removed their tent tops entirely (some had more choice in that than others!)

Market-goers were treated to all the sights and sounds of the season. wind or no wind.

We were lucky to have Ursula Fugger from Windswept B & B out as our guest Chef at the market on May 25th. She was one of our favourites last season, and she came with even more goodies this season.

NIght Kitchen Pizza

Guest Chef Tim from the Night Kitchen whipped some fabulous European style pizza. Using the thin crust that makes the Night Kitchen so famous, he topped it with a delicious mix of heirloom tomatoes, gaelic garlic, fresh basil and mozarella from Empire Cheese

Corn Fest 2010 - Try it & Buy It.

On August 18th, the Peterborough Downtown Farmers' Market hosted Corn Fest. A huge thanks to McCleans Berry Farm & Fishers Farm who donated lots of great peaches & cream corn to be handed out to our fabulous market goers! We prepared corn in a few ways (boiled & roasted) & gave out lots of delicious samples to market-goers. There were several options for toppings -

The obvious choice of what goes with corn is BUTTER, but we thought why not spice it up a bit & some speciality butters.

Fresh Herbs (Rosemary, Thyme & Oregano & Gaelic Garlic

To make the following speciaty butters i simply mixed the fresh ingredients in with softened butter, blended (by hand) in a mixing bowl, and then placed them in a serving container & refirgerated over night.

Fresh Parmesan & Roasted Gaelic Garlic.

Ths was by far the most popular option! I made more part way through the market

Chili Powder & lime Juice

To roast CORN:

1) Soak in a water for 30 min (with husks on)

2) Remove a few layers of outer husk & place directly on the grill. 3) Continually turn & let grill for 12-15 minutes.

4) . Corn is ready when the outer husks have blackened & charred. 5) Remove corn from heat. Let cool for 5-10min.

6) Peel back husks.

7) Top with butter & enjoy.

Gazpacho made from heirloom melons, peaches & tomatoes

Rainbow Chard stems diced. Sliced white wonder cucumber

A delicious pate made from sprouted sunflower seeds, tvp & fresh herbs was placed on top . . . .

Here are some of the ingredients for the pate. Dahn sprouted the sunflower seeds in his apt over the last three days . . . Basil!

Our Guest Chef on Aug. 4th was Sue Houde, who you can find at St. Veronus Cafe & Tap Room or through her catering company Two Dishes. Sue came down to the market to gather her own ingredients at 8:30 in the morning. That's as fresh as it get . . . . After collecting Melons from Deer Bay Farms, Peaches from Francis Eborall & Sons, Swiss Chard & Fresh Herbs from Sunroot Organics, Peppers from Martin Oates & Heirloom Tomatoes from McCleans Berry Farm & Deer Bay Farms, she rushed back to St. Veronus to prepare some deliciousness . . .

She fresh baked tea biscuits at St. Verona's

& then smouthered them with a fabulous concoction made from the ingredients collected above

Market go-ers gobbled up the treats with enthused "MMM's" & "Do you serve this at St.Verona's", "Where do you cook" . . . . . many silent contend eaters graced the crowd
